The word wyrd is pronounced just like the English word “weird,” but means something entirely different. Wyrd is an esoteric concept that can be tricky to grasp; I am not sure any human can define what it is exactly. Wyrd is something not of this world. Some equate it to destiny. Others define it as a dynamic web of life force that connects everyone and everything in the multiverse. I consider wyrd to be these things and also the primordial energy of flow. I see it as the force that connects us to the Divine, to the Creator. I think of wyrd as the Life Force that contains all forces of life – the underlying fabric of all existence.
I believe you are in flow with wyrd when you let divine intelligence inform your path – with the divine being whatever you call that elusive something that is the Everything, what has been called All That Is. This creative intelligence directs you to parts of the web of wyrd with the greatest potential for connecting to love. It does this via your intuition and inspired thoughts you receive to follow your heart.
A Wyrd Year came about when I flowed with wyrd: I listened to my intuition and followed my joys. I actively engaged forces of life in the form of what I experience as the runes – forces that connect my heart to great delight. There are those who consider runes a simple divination system, one with one-dimensional representations of forces and elements of nature. While their symbols do represent aspects of nature, seeing them only as such does both you and them a disservice. Runes are so much more than concepts. Their symbols represent formless powers of the multiverse. Runes are living entities; they are guides, helpers, and teachers. Runes offer alternative ways to perceive the world of form and the formless. These intelligent powers offer support, suggestions, and neutrality. And they invite all to have conversations with them.
That is what I did during this year of wyrd. I went into trance meditative states to consciously engage the runic powers. I asked for teachings and information to understand their particular forms of intelligence better. The runes responded with the passages I share within this offering.
Throughout these digital pages – in addition to learning the symbol, calendar dates, and general concepts associated with each rune – the runes offer practical information and ways to work with their energies. Many of the runes speak of possible interpretations of their symbols should they appear in a rune reading. They offer thoughts on how to approach life, your days, and yourselves. These symbols sometimes employ other symbols to expand on concepts. They give stories, practices, and tools to enhance your days on earth. The runes also discuss energetic infrastructures and forces that exist within you and the world.
Interactions with any of these powers is akin to engaging the wind. Sometimes the runes dance with you, other times they caress you, and every once in a while you get knocked down by the force of their energy. No matter how gentle a rune might engage you, all are formidable at their core. They do not mince words and are not afraid to present “big” questions. All are intense and serious. The runes are serious because they wish us to take this life seriously. Not because life is serious, but because it is a sacred force gifted each and every one of us. If we allow it, this force will enchant and delight us.
The runes invite us to join in some serious and sacred play with the Divine and with wyrd. They help us arrange priorities so we put love, life, connection, flow, and joy at the top of our lists. The runes encourage us to connect with ourselves, with each other, and with the Oneness. All of these actions connect us to the web of wyrd. Actually, we are always connected to wyrd and always in flow – this just gets forgotten at times. The runes are here to provide counsel, connection, compassion, and courage. They encourage us to look upon the world with them and their vision. They call each of us back to the knowledge of eternal connection to wyrd. And they can help us make all the moments of our days wyrd ones.
